The town of Siatista became the meeting point for dialogue, ideas, and European cooperation as it hosted the very first event of the DiverCity project from 10 to 13 March 2026. This opening gathering marked the official launch of the initiative under the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme, highlighting the European Union’s strong commitment to promoting equality, combating discrimination, and strengthening democratic participation across its member states and partner regions.
Funded by the European Commission, the DiverCity project reflects a broader EU vision: empowering local communities to actively uphold fundamental rights and transform diversity into a source of resilience and social cohesion. Within this framework, the event in Siatista brought together partners, municipalities, civil society organisations, and local stakeholders from Southeastern Europe to exchange knowledge and build lasting cooperation.
At the heart of the discussions was the role of local communities as key drivers of inclusion. Through keynote speeches, thematic sessions, and interactive workshops, participants explored how European values, such as equality, participation, and solidarity, can be translated into concrete actions at the local level. The event also showcased how initiatives supported by the CERV programme contribute to strengthening civic engagement, encouraging intercultural dialogue, and addressing discrimination in everyday life.
From the very beginning, the gathering fostered a strong sense of connection. A welcome dinner set the tone for open exchange, followed by the official presentation of the DiverCity project and its contribution to EU priorities on inclusion and diversity. A keynote speech on tackling discrimination and racism at the community level sparked meaningful dialogue, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between institutions and citizens.
The second day focused on sharing experiences and solutions. Under the theme “Diversity as Strength,” participants presented best practices, discussed regional challenges such as social exclusion and inequality, and explored ways to replicate successful approaches across countries. Interactive roundtables provided space for personal perspectives, including powerful testimonies from migrant participants, demonstrating how inclusive policies and community support can lead to successful integration.
Beyond discussions, participants engaged with the local context of Siatista through cultural visits, reinforcing the idea that Europe’s diversity is deeply rooted in its local identities and traditions. These experiences highlighted how cultural heritage can serve as a bridge for mutual understanding and social cohesion, key priorities of the European Union.
As the event concluded, it became clear that this first DiverCity meeting successfully translated the objectives of the CERV programme into practice. It strengthened partnerships, generated practical and transferable ideas, and reinforced a shared commitment to building inclusive and resilient communities.
More than just a project launch, the event demonstrated how EU-supported initiatives can create real impact on the ground, connecting people, empowering communities, and shaping a more inclusive European future.
